Canning With Mom

Preserving Traditions events are great to share with your kids! One of the reasons Preserving Traditions was founded because a lot of us didn’t learn how to cook, can, bake, and pickle as kids. So children and teens are definitely welcome at our events!

We have a couple common-sense requests regarding children’s attendance:

  • Know your kid. There is no set “minimum age” for Preserving Traditions attendance. You know your child best – will s/he be able to pay attention and participate for a 2-3 hour event? Will you be able to enjoy the event without having to spend all your attention on your child? Is your child likely to be a distraction to the others in the group?
  • Make decisions one event at a time. Some events will require good knife skills or handling heavy pots of boiling water. At what level will your child participate in such events? It’s fine to come and watch, or to start learning kitchen skills. You’re also free to attend for part of a session and leave early if the fun fades after the third quart of hulling strawberries. But some events may not be suitable for all kids, especially pre-teens – you make the call, and have a backup plan if things go awry in mid-event.
  • Your child’s safety is primarily your responsibility. Only bring as many kids as you can keep an eye on. Dangerous kitchen behavior – running, shouting, distracting people using knives or other potentially dangerous equipment – will not be tolerated.

We want Preserving Traditions events to be fun for everyone in attendance. Enthusiastic participants of all ages are welcome!
